Tavan Room Parent Overview

Help Make Every Child’s Year a Little Brighter

What is a Room Parent?

Serving as a vital link between the PTO, teachers, and families, Room Parents help build the sense of community that makes our school special. This role is perfect for someone who wants to stay connected to the classroom, enjoys communicating with others, and brings positive energy and organization to the table.

By supporting teachers, connecting families, and creating meaningful experiences for students, Room Parents make a lasting impact. Whether your involvement is big or small, it helps every child feel seen, supported, and celebrated.

Who can be Room Parent?

We welcome all, no experience necessary! We value a diversity of perspectives. Whether you're a working parent, caregiver, grandparent, or just new to the school, you belong here! Room Parents come in all forms, and our children benefit from that.

Great News! You don’t have to do it all; we encourage co-room parents and shared roles!

What Do Room Parents Do?

  • Support the Teacher
    • Room Parents partner closely with the teacher, checking in regularly, helping with classroom needs, and sharing wish lists or supply requests. You may also coordinate extra help for in-class activities or behind-the-scenes support.
  • Share PTO News
    • Help keep families in the loop by forwarding PTO updates and important school announcements (we’ll provide these). You're a key part of helping our school community stay informed and connected.
  • Rally Volunteers
    • Tavan PTO hosts many fun events throughout the year, and we rely on family support to make them shine! Room Parents help ensure each classroom is represented, encourage families to get involved, and help coordinate volunteers for both school-wide and classroom activities.
  • Organize and Lead Teacher Appreciation
    • Room Parents help coordinate holiday, birthday, and Teacher Appreciation week gifts. All fundraising efforts should be inclusive. Using language like “give what you can, in whatever way works for you” and approved by the teacher beforehand.
  • Welcome New Families
    • When a new student joins the class, Room Parents reach out to welcome their family and offer help navigating school life at Tavan or at least point them in the direction of our Welcoming Committee. You are the ultimate ambassador and help build a classroom community.
  • Stay Connected
    • When possible, Room Parents should, but are not required to, attend PTO meetings and stay engaged with broader school initiatives. Got a special skill, hobby, or creative idea? We’d love to know about it!
