WHAT IS A “ROOM PARENT?”

A Room Parent is a liaison between the PTO, teachers, and families. A Room Parent is someone who has a strong desire to be involved in and connected to classroom and school happenings, great communication and organizational skills, and positive energy and enthusiasm.

AS A ROOM PARENT, YOU WILL …

Champion Teachers

This includes meeting with them regularly, connecting with other Room Parents, and acting as point-of-contact to get needs met. This could mean facilitating in-class support, helping with administrative tasks, disseminating wish lists or supply needs for the classroom, etc.  

Share PTO Communications

Send weekly or biweekly updates (these will be shared with you) to classroom families. We want to build the strongest school community possible, and your support plays a critical role in that process.

Spearhead Volunteering Efforts

The Tavan PTO hosts several events throughout the school year (Bingo Night, Halloween HiJinx, Tavan Tinsel, Tavan Twinkles, Movie Night, Sweetheart Dance and Teacher Appreciation Week). These events rely on support from school families. Room Parents help ensure there is ample participation from each classroom.

Organize Teacher Appreciation & Gifts

We love our teachers and staff and feel passionately that they feel appreciated. Room Parents help pool donations to purchase gifts for teachers (holidays/Tinsel, birthdays, and Teacher Appreciation week). With equity in mind, all fundraising requests should first be approved by the classroom teacher and must always embrace a contribute if you are able, in any way that suits you philosophy, so families can contribute meaningfully, even if they can’t contribute financially.

Be a Resource for New Families

When new students start at Tavan, Room Parents should reach out to welcome them and their families to our community, offering to answer any questions along the way.

Participate in the PTO

To the extent possible (we understand it’s hard to juggle it all!), Room Parents should make an effort to attend PTO meetings and remain connected to schoolwide happenings and news. Do you have an expertise, skill, or passion to share? We would love to learn more about you!
